Background and Purpose of Meeting:
The Knox County Sheriff's Primary was held on May 5th, 2026. Candidate for Sheriff, Mike Davis, has filed an election contest with the Tennessee Republican Party State Primary Board. The basis for the contest, as emailed to you by the Davis campaign, is that the indictments of two of the Sheriff's candidates, David Amburn and J.J. Jones, following the outcome of the May 5th Republican primary have irrevocably tainted the election. Therefore, the Davis filing contends that the State Primary Board should order a new election.
The results of the Knox County Sheriff Primary:
1. Brent Gibson - 19,676 (44.14%)
2. David Amburn - 13,446 (30.16%)
3. Mike Davis - 6,330 (14.20%)
4. J.J. Jones - 5,124 (11.50%)
The Tennessee Republican Party State Primary Board does not have the authority to order a new primary election to take place prior to, or on the general election ballot. Therefore, as directed by Rule K, Section 2, the options available to the State Primary Board are as follows:
1. Let the election stand with Mr. Brent Gibson as the Republican Nominee
2. Choose another candidate among the candidates and award them the Republican Nomination
3. Vacate the election entirely, leaving no Republican nominee for the General election
The State Primary Board Meeting is not subject to the rules of evidence or other procedures followed in courts of law or equity. The meeting will be governed by Robert Rules of Order. Proxies will not be allowed and a quorum must be established for any measures to be considered.
