NASHVILLE, Tenn.-February 1, 2016—Governor Bill Haslam this evening went before the Tennessee General Assembly to give his 2016 State of the State Address and present his budget priorities for the state.
Haslam’s speech talked about Tennessee’s success in education and the fact more Tennesseans have a job today than at any point in state history. In addition to those items, the Governor discussed:
- Investing $261 million new dollars into Tennessee’s public education system;
- Providing $104.6 million for teacher salaries;
- Reforming the state’s higher education system as well as investing in it to meet the Drive to 55 goals;
- Placing $100 million into the state’s Rainy Day Fund; bringing the total to $668 million.
Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Ryan Haynes applauded the Governor’s speech and remarked, “Scaling back government, making smarter investments, and raising standards—those are the hallmarks of Republican leadership under Governor Haslam. He put forth a wise and responsible vision this evening that keeps Tennessee on our path of achievement. I look forward to seeing the final product come together as our Legislature begins its work.”
